Community Overview

Miramar PyramidMost famously known as the setting for the movie Top Gun, Miramar is home to the busy Marine Corps Air Station and a thriving commercial district. Located in the heart of San Diego County, Miramar has easy access to freeways making it accessible to a large employee population.

This mix has created an area containing thriving business parks with firms from many different industries. Miramar is lined with furniture stores such as Ashley Furniture and Mor Furniture. Many car dealerships and repair shops operate in the community, as well.

The History of Miramar

MCASIn 1890, a newspaperman by the name of E.W. Scripps bought the land for what is now called Miramar. He is credited with naming the mesa Miramar, which loosely translated from Spanish means “view of the sea.”

In 1917, the Army purchased the land of Miramar and established a military presence. The land has been used by the Army, Navy, and also the Marines over the years for all the major wars since World War I. Presently, the base function as Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

Type of Housing

Miramar Housing

Standard military housing is available both on base and off base. In addition to the present housing available, the military was approved for 1,600 housing units on 264 acres of land just north of Highway 52. These include apartments, town houses, and duplexes which will help relieve the housing crunch for young service members.

Other housing includes several upscale apartment complexes as well as moderately priced homes.

Transportation

Miramar TransportationMiramar is conveniently located next to the I-805 and I-5 split on the west and I-15 on the east.

Residents are able to traverse the county in ease with so many major roads accessible.

Miramar bus routes and park-and-ride systems provide public transportation opportunities for those wanting to travel to other parts of San Diego without having to drive themselves.

From Miramar’s central location, reaching any part of San Diego is quick and convenient.

Education

Miramar CollegeLocal schools cater to the educational needs of all ages. There are five elementary schools located in the area. These schools are proud members of the San Diego City Schools District.

Also located in the area, Miramar Community College is well-known for many vocational programs.

Recreation

Barbeques and picnic tables are readily available at Miramar Lake year around. This scenic 180-acre lake is tucked into the hills, and makes for spectacular views. Available to the public, this recreational spot includes boating, fishing, hiking, and picnicking. Every year, the Miramar Air Show provides dazzling aerial entertainment and education for residents and visitors alike.

For an adrenaline ride, the Miramar Speed Circuit has a ¼ mile technical road coarse with an asphalt racetrack. The karts reach speeds of 40 miles per hour, making it a perfect place for adults and children alike.

Miramar LakeMiramar is also only minutes away from world-famous attractions like the San Diego Zoo and Sea World.

With world-class entertainment in all directions, Miramar is a very eventful place to live or work.
